Economy at a Glance

An outlook about the wider economy of Bangladesh.

Overview

A fast-growing emerging economy

Bangladesh has emerged as one of the most dynamic economies in South Asia, supported by broad-based growth drivers and favourable demographics.

Bangladesh is widely regarded as one of the fastest-growing emerging economies in South Asia. Growth has been underpinned by a diversified base of drivers — most notably ready-made garment (RMG) exports, which have established the country as a leading global apparel supplier, alongside steady inflows of overseas remittances that support household incomes and domestic demand. Resilient domestic consumption and sustained investment in infrastructure have together reinforced the country's long-term development trajectory.

Underlying these trends is a large and youthful population, which provides a deep labour force and a rapidly expanding middle class. Rising incomes, accelerating urbanisation and wider access to financial services are gradually shifting the composition of demand and broadening the base of domestic savers and investors — factors that, over time, can deepen the formal financial system and create new opportunities across sectors.

The capital market plays an increasingly important role in channelling these long-term savings into productive investment. The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), operating under the supervision of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), give households and institutions a regulated avenue to participate in the growth of listed companies and to build wealth over the long term.
